Inserted risers generally comprise of flat copper strips with high silver content. Inserted risers can vary in shape and length, depending on the application its used for. Riser style and shapes can be customized to suit winding leads. Each of the risers is fitted into a notch or slot machined into each of the commutator segments. Each riser strip is then brazed or tig welded into place.
Many commutator types can have inserted risers: including v-ring, glass banded and external shrink ring commutators.
Commutators with inserted risers are often less desirable than commutators with a solid riser because of their susceptibility to stresses and frequency vibrations within the motor. However, in many circumstances because of the extremely long risers - they are the most viable and economical solution. In some circumstances insulated spacers and or braided rope with a thermo-setting resinous material may need to be installed to provide an increase in resistance to stresses without increasing the mass of the riser.
