Glass Banded

Commutators
Typical Glass-Banded commutators differ from V-ring type commutators. V-ring commutators have steel v-rings insulated with mica that hold the copper mica assembly together while under pressure. Because pressure is only applied at both ends of the segment pack, vibration and lifting can occur when copper bars are required to be quite long. With a glass banded construction, res-i-glass banding is applied under tension, to cut grooves along the surface of the copper bars. The number of bands and their placement can vary depending on bar length, brush placement and overall armature design.
Glass band commutators are often lighter in overall weight than their v-ring style counter parts. The steel core on a v-ring type commutator is often thicker because of the space needed for steel v-rings and anchoring nut/bolts. On a glass banded commutator the core is usually just a insulated barrel. .
Glass Banded to V-ring Conversions
Glass banded commutators do have some advantages - depending upon the application they are being used for. However, for some applications they present more disadvantages than advantages. Glass banded commutators are difficult to repair, cannot be re-insulted and because of the banding - can be susceptible to failure in high heat and contamination environments. There are some counter measures that can be applied to the banding in the final stages of construction - but in some circumstances these are still not enough. In these situations a glass banded to v-ring conversion may be considered.
Converting a Glass banded commutator to a V-ring type commutator is not always a viable or possible solution. There are many factors that must be considered before attempting this type of re-construction for an aftermarket application. Weight, copper segment length, armature air flow/venting and cost are all factors that must be examined by our qualified engineers.
